Barely an hour outside the country's capital is a small yet very
beautiful city called San Pedro de Macoris. Named after the province,
the city is one of the
favorite destinations of foreigners who want
to stay in the country longer than regular tourists. This city also
has beautiful beaches with 5-star resorts.
Of course, there are also
small adult themed resorts in the city that cater to men who want to
have some intimate moments with a Dominican lady.

A Short History
San Pedro de Macoris was established by the Cubans. They had to
leave Cuba because of a war in the late 19th century. However, they
did not just arrive
here and populate the area. They applied what
they learned in Cuba and used it to push the province into great
economic advancement. Their expertise
in sugarcane coupled with
favorable prices on sugar boosted the economic status of the city.
The Fall of the Sugarcane Industry
Unfortunately, the sugar industry is not consistent on its
pricing. Prices went down, which meant lower earnings for the city.
It was even made worse in 1998
when Hurricane George destroyed a lot
of structures in San Pedro de Macoris. However, the city started to
rebuild and aside from sugar, they have added
tourism as part of
their source of revenue.
Improvement in Tourism
The improvement in tourism in San Pedro de Macoris is not just
based on the beautiful beach. The boardwalk was significantly
improved to attract not just
tourists but also locals. The boardwalk
is called Malecón and any tourist visiting the city should go
there. It's close to many popular resorts and the
nightlife in this
area is very impressive.
There are two factors that have contributed to the liveliness of
the boardwalk. The first factor is the increasing number of
foreigners visiting the area. The
second factor is the large number
of young people in the city. Because of the aggressive expansion in
the past, various establishments such as
telecommunications, fire
prevention groups and schools were put up. San Pedro de Macoris has
the Universidad Central del Este, which is a
well known school in the
Dominican Republic.
Baseball
Even though there are many professional baseball teams in Santo
Domingo, San Pedro de Macoris is considered the cradle of top
professional baseball
players. More than 70 Dominicans that played in
the MLB (Major League Baseball) were born in this province. You can watch the skills of the locals as the
city has a
professional team competing in the Winter Baseball League. The team
is called Estrellas Orientales and they have a stadium in the city.
The
stadium is called Estadio Tetelo Vargas. The winter league is
played in the last quarter of the year. The top teams get to play in
the Caribbean series. Visit
