Thanks to the Internet, almost any information you need on a
place, person or activity can be located in just mere seconds. You
don't need to wait for
the report on TV to get the latest update on
the news you are following and you don't need to buy a guidebook just
for travel tips. This is especially true for
popular locations and
the Dominican Republic is no exception. Almost every nook and resort
in the country has been scrutinized, praised and even scorned by
some
tourists because of their recent experiences.
But there are a few places in the Dominican Republic that are not
yet known to many tourists, and even though they are relatively
unknown, they are still worth a visit.
Rio San Juan
The fact that Rio San Juan is not that popular to tourists is a
bit ironic. Rio San Juan is located in the northern part of the
country and is just kilometers away from a
party town called Sosua.
However, Rio San Juan is often not part of the travel plans of many
tourists. Rio San Juan is no push over when it comes to their
beaches.
The only challenge in this area is on transportation since
you have to ride a motorbike to reach this place.
Playa Caleton
Playa Grande is undoubtedly one of the most admired beaches in the
Caribbean. Various resorts and world class golf courses are set up
near the shores of Playa
Grande as tourists from around the world
enjoy the waters and other activities. But the nearby beach is almost
a secret. If you're in Playa Grande, hire a motorbike
so that you'll
be taken to Playa Caleton. Technically, Playa Caleton is still part
of Rio San Juan but this beach is often associated with Playa Grande.
Cabrera Helados
If you're expecting a place that you have to visit in the
Dominican Republic, think again. Cabrera Helados is actually a brand
of ice cream that you must try when you're
in this country. Because
of the tropical weather, street vendors are always out selling local
ice cream. While there is no consensus on which is the best ice
cream,
Cabrera Helados is very popular in the country and that should
be a good indicator of its taste. If you're not concerned about
eating street food, then you should
try the variety of flavors of ice
cream from Cabrera Helados.
Caves in Parque Mirador Del Este
Located near "Faro a Colon" in Santo Domingo, this
amazing parque has three caves or sinkholes that leads to an entirely
different atmosphere. The sinkholes are
very humid so expect that you
will sweat as soon as you enter the sinkhole. But you're not there to
enjoy a different surrounding (take note of the plants there)
as the
sinkholes also lead to a lake. Expect a fee when you enter the park
(around $2.00) but the experience of dipping inside a sinkhole that
literally covers a
large pool is worth the humidity and makes the fee
(and the sweat) worth it.
