Brazil's annual festival is held four days before Ash Wednesday
and is one of the most popular carnival celebrations in the world.
Almost every media outlet is in Rio de
Janeiro every year to witness
the colorful display of costumes and dance. For an experienced
tourist, the Rio de Janeiro Festival is always on their list of best
festivals.
However, the Dominican Republic also has festivities that can be
likened to Brazil. The festivities in this country do not necessarily
have a religious tone. Instead of lasting
for only four days, the
Carnival in the Dominican Republic lasts for one month. The
culmination of their festivities is on February 27 which is the
country's Independence Day.
Even though you'll see masks that depict
the "Moors" and the "Christians," the celebration
is actually based on the country's march towards history.
Festivals Around the Country
Another difference between the festivities in the Dominican
Republic and Rio is that the celebration is not just found in one
city. Every town in the Dominican Republic
celebrates on February 27
as they commemorate their day of independence. Bigger cities such as
Puerto Plata and Punta Cana are putting up a show to entice tourists
to visit them in February. But you don't have to travel miles from
your favorite resort just to be see interesting activities. If you're
staying in one of the adult themed resorts
in the Dominican Republic,
you'll be able to enjoy the February festivities with your adult
companion without too much traveling.
Visiting Santo Domingo in February
On the other hand, if your adult themed resort is located near or
in Santo Domingo, consider yourself lucky. As the country's capital
and center of political power, it has the
biggest celebration is the
Dominican Republic. The celebration lasts for one month and takes
place around the city. However, the culminating activities are held
in La Vega,
which used to be the city center. The festivities in La Vega Carnaval are not necessarily political
in tone. While there are some music, food and parties in the city,
processions
are held on Saturdays and Sundays of February. In fact,
the parties and other activities might not be as interesting without
these processions. These are religious processions
where participants
wear masks and even paint their bodies. The masks offer the religious
tone while body painting is something cultural. Participants paint
their body
black as a tribute to their early ancestors which were
African slaves brought by the Spanish during their occupation.
Remembering the Basics
February is undoubtedly the busiest month of the year in Santo
Domingo because of the carnival. If you happen to stay in this city
during the festivities, always exercise
presence of mind and common
sense. If you stay in one of the adult themed resorts in the city,
it's always best to go out with your companion as your personal
guide.
Aside from her knowledge on pleasing you in so many ways, her
personal knowledge about the city is also useful in finding the best
spots for a party while being safe at all times.
